A Call for Hope
TLC: The Tom & Connie Update

Waiting & Hoping--A Thank You

Hope_stone_2 My first years on the west coast were spent on Orcas Island where you could find me working at the Home Grown or Cafe Olga, & I know how tight the community is in all the San Juan's small towns. But today, after Ian at the San Juan Update contacted me out-of-the-blue to lend his support for Tom & Connie's recovery, I quickly witnessed how a community can come together to gather strength & support.

Because not all of you have read the latest news posted in the comments on my last entry, I wanted to update you all that today we have a cause to hope that both Tom & Connie will survive their devastating accident.

I speak with Tom once a day, enough to support but not overwhelm, & he was thankfully released from the hospital yesterday as he indeed "amazed the docs" at Mt. Shasta as Ian wrote. While Tom's injuries were severe, Connie's have certainly been more life-threatening. Over the weekend she has had experimental surgery on her vertibrae, & in a separate operation, her spleen & gallbladder have been removed. While she survived both surgeries, her unconscious state had Tom profoundly worried.

But this afternoon, the best news we've had from Tom came across the phone--Connie was responding positively, & able to shake her feet in response to questions. Tom is preparing himself to be with his love tomorrow, & despite his intense grief, has written some of his most beautiful poetry in this time of knowing/unknowing. He has met with monks in the area which have sent out an "Ohm" to heal Connie.

The important thing is that we are all working together for what is best... Thank you for caring, & taking the time support these wonderful people. As Tom said today in behalf of Connie, "Keep the emails & love coming!"

Hi Tim,

I got home late tonight & wasn't able to talk to Tom, but touched base with his nephew... Tom got his stitches out today & is apparently going out for walks, looking a lot better physically, & is talking up a blue streak! He is loving all the beautiful cherry trees that are in bloom in Mount Shasta & is going to visit a monastery--he told me he wants to convert to Buddhism so he can coniue his work for love & world peace. That's Tom!

Things are looking up with Connie & she should be able to get her tubes out soon so she can talk :) So today's word was positive again. What a roller coaster this has been!

I will pass on your message & support. What a wonderful community you have... I so look forward to having them home safely.

Take care, Catherine

Gina Wilson

dearest already-Buddhist Tom and
soul-mate and mischief-mate Connie,
remembering I just SAW YOU BOTH at
my buddy Al Young's poetry reading where you, Tom,(among us open
micers or mikers) read and I was
given a treasure by you, your
autobiog and 'serendipity' (my
dear poet Larry Eigner's favorite
word) -whilst I was in bed with a mean flu virus READING YOUR LIVES just as SOMEONE ELSE WAS SO CRUEL IN TRYING TO TAKE YOUR LIVES! and
then I had already e-mailed you
my 'invited' non-linear comments on the book---
my thoughts, indeed my heart, my
breath, were with both of you not
having known until dear one in our connected lives, John Rowe, wrote to us!!!!!
knowing the grievous injuries
my heart and all thoughts were with
you and still are, in between every
other single thought I have and
poems I write and songs I sing,
there is no 'space in the closeness
with loved friends' - will send you
a copy of my most sung song (over
100 people in Oakland were married with Hannibal singing the song
and a number of "send-offs" at
LOVE CENTER. ) I had thought most child-like simple-est of songs I wrote and put in the trash can until opera singer/gospel Hannibal
Means retrieved it and sang it. (were you there when he, visiting from Austria at My Whole Note poetry series (where you read
regularly and also emceed for me when I had one of my many fall-down
accidents) was featured with one
of our poets? And embarassingly
enough (Hannibal knowing me since
he was already in opera at 17-
Madie Bacon's chorus -)
began with (I thinking it was
to be a 'general subject poem_)"
JESSE WHO HAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL
BREASTS IN THE WORLD, AND THEN
when he talked about the song
from musical drama,"lullaby-
(DEAR RABBIT) I sang it with him!
The LOVE ONLY LOVE song (that
child-like song I wrote about the
love brought to us by singing Hasidic Rabbi so many of
us knew in Berkeley, circa 1967?) , Schlomo Carlbach who also in his
beautiful opera baritone, sang in Israel, song "MASTER, FOR THE LAST TIME...and my soul feels free"
Greatly respected in Israel.
They DIDN'T SAY IN Israel he was a Hippy, wall-eyed, Santa Claus looking son of very famous NYC Hasidic RABBI who captured the youth of Berkeley (my son Joel included) who wore yamacas (spell?_) and followed him to synagoue and ate meals with him (kosher) food scattered all over the room until DURANT HOTEL made him move out...Dear Schlomo, for his preaching LOVE I wrote LOVE ONLY LOVE and it could have been written for Tom and Connie.
love only love

'I HAVE A FRIEND,
WHO ISN'T AFRAID TO LOVE ME
HE/SHE IS WARM AND FREE
AS HIS/HER HEART IS MEANT TO BE
SHE/HE UNDERSTANDS
THE TEAR IN THE EYE OF
THOSE WHO KNOW
JUST HOW ANGRY
THE WORLD HAS COME TO BE
LOVE ONLY LOVE
LOVE ONLY LOVE
ONLY WITH LOVE
WILL WE MAKE THE ANGRY WORLD
GO AWAY

TAKE LOVE/MAKE LOVE
GIVE LOVE AWAY
MAKE THIS ANGRY\
WORLD GO AWAY

LOVE IS SO SIMPLE
JUST GIVE IT AWAY AND IT COMES BACK
SOME THEY'RE ARE
WHO NEVER 'KNOW WHAT IT IS FOR.'

THEY DON'T BOTHER ME
I GOT SO THAT I COULD LIVE
LIKE A CHILD/CHILD OF LOVE
IN A WORLD OF HATE AND WAR
LOVE ONLY LOVE/LOVE ONLY LOVE
(ETC. CHORUS)
(Nina Simone told me in a startling unexpected
collect long distance phone call
at 7:30 am from Hannibal's cousin's
place in Wash. DC to say sweetly
(NOT IN HER JULIARD CONSERVATORY/GREAT
SPEAKER FOR HER RACE/'HEAVY'
VOICE)"YOUR SONG HAS HEALED ME!!! (she- in a category with the most astonishing we hear when the radio
turns to her - is it DYLAN? ONE
WILL ASK EACH TIME, muttering,
who can THAT be..., is it...no, it's Nina Simone) -- Hannibal said she played a wonderful piano for this song "I sang it all across the country"
they toured together.......his
dream come true!!!!

that from NY, or Coos Bay (me)

'wherever' to poet to Buddhist.

Hello Gina,

Wow, this whole experience has been an amazing journey... To finally *meet* Tom's family in Mount Shasta via the telephone vine where our world connects, to hearing about folks who have shared their verse with half the way around the globe.

Tom's now in Redding with Connie, staying in the hospitality suite at Mercy Hospital, so I'm sure he's lonely & I will definitely pass your message onto him! Glad know there are so many near & far that care about these folks.

All the best,
Cathy

Dear Catherine,

Thank you for your posts. The poets at San Francisco's Sacred Grounds Cafe send their blessings and prayers to Tom and Connie. Glad to hear they are both doing better. Will check in often.

love,

Clara

Jesse,

I have heard so much about you, think perhaps I met you down in the Bay on one of my Odegard visits south... You are a legend in my mind, from all Tom's praise of your wordsmithing. Told Tom about your poem & read him your wise thoughts on the Buddhist's path. Hopefully soon he will have access to a computer where he can read all these poetic messages & respond in kind.

Good to read your work from afar! That poem surely could have been written for Tom, the man whose not afraid to love anyone (except maybe Bush). Now that's he's going Buddhist, he may have to love that Texan too.

Best, Catherine

Clara,

Thanks for keeping the poet circle in-the-know & thinking postively. Lord knows Tom will have a lot of poetry to share with you all when he's next at Sacred Grounds! Perhaps you have some odes to the Odegards springing from your ink wells. Feel free to send & I will post!

Love,
Catherine

I am so thrilled to hear that the twosome are on the road to healing. I have to admit, I felt sick when his niece dropped me an email to aprise me of the situation. It had been only days before that Tom and I had enjoyed a wonderful walk together in a neighborhood that we both share much history in. It was great to actually be able to spend some time with him; we hadn't seen eachother in a couple of years so there was a lot to catch up on. And as always, Miss G! So I'm taking this opportunity (between the wash and dry cycle)to send out my own private ohm's to them both. I'll check back later ...with some verse :)

John [JC] Cosgrave

This was a shock! My ponytailled poet friend and his lady having to go through such a horific accident. He couldn't make it to our group in Santa Cruz this year to be our featured poet to our dismay. Tom promised he'd get down next year to share his wonderful words. All of us at the Wired Poetry readings wish for them both to heal and heal strong. We hope Tom will feel like coming back down next year and visit us in Santa Cruz. Love and Peace, JC
