My first years on the west coast were spent on Orcas Island where you could find me working at the Home Grown or Cafe Olga, & I know how tight the community is in all the San Juan's small towns. But today, after Ian at the San Juan Update contacted me out-of-the-blue to lend his support for Tom & Connie's recovery, I quickly witnessed how a community can come together to gather strength & support.
Because not all of you have read the latest news posted in the comments on my last entry, I wanted to update you all that today we have a cause to hope that both Tom & Connie will survive their devastating accident.
I speak with Tom once a day, enough to support but not overwhelm, & he was thankfully released from the hospital yesterday as he indeed "amazed the docs" at Mt. Shasta as Ian wrote. While Tom's injuries were severe, Connie's have certainly been more life-threatening. Over the weekend she has had experimental surgery on her vertibrae, & in a separate operation, her spleen & gallbladder have been removed. While she survived both surgeries, her unconscious state had Tom profoundly worried.
But this afternoon, the best news we've had from Tom came across the phone--Connie was responding positively, & able to shake her feet in response to questions. Tom is preparing himself to be with his love tomorrow, & despite his intense grief, has written some of his most beautiful poetry in this time of knowing/unknowing. He has met with monks in the area which have sent out an "Ohm" to heal Connie.
The important thing is that we are all working together for what is best... Thank you for caring, & taking the time support these wonderful people. As Tom said today in behalf of Connie, "Keep the emails & love coming!"
